Gun violence is a public health crisis, one to which neither Massachusetts nor Somerville is immune. Although we have some of the strongest gun control laws in the country, there is still more work to do to update our laws and break cycles of violence.
I have worked on:
- Bills to ban assault weapon manufacturing in Massachusetts, to prohibit ghost guns, to develop crime gun data reporting and analysis, to require licensed gun owners to submit a yearly affidavit, and to hold gun owners civilly liable for damage caused by lost or stolen guns.
- Legislation that would ban anyone other than on-duty law enforcement officers from carrying guns in public buildings, in polling places, and on the State House grounds.
- A bill that would allow for the immediate suspension of an individual’s firearms license and surrender of firearms if the plaintiff in a harassment prevention order is in immediate danger of harassment.
- An open letter inviting other state legislatures to join the Commonwealth in passing common-sense gun laws, to which a total of 132 Massachusetts legislators signed on.
- Gathering signatories for an Op-Ed to the Globe calling on Congress to ban assault weapons.
If elected, I will fight for:
- Enacting legislation to update and strengthen our state's gun control laws.
- Funding organizations like the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, UTEC, Roca, and others that work to break cycles of violence by addressing trauma, building trust, and providing leadership opportunities with support and mentoring.
- Promoting gun buybacks and town halls to engage communities in violence prevention efforts.
